Abstract
1433508 Combustion chambers; cycles DAIMLER-BENZ AG 18 June 1973 [21 June 1972] 28790/73 Heading F1B A four-stroke I.C. engine comprises a variable volume principal combustion chamber 16 and a pre-combustion chamber 32 in which is formed or to which is supplied a combustible mixture, the chambers communicating via an opening 37 which is shut-off during the compression stoke, and an ignition means 34 being provided in the pre-combustion chamber 32. After the opening 37 is closed by valve 40 the mixture in the precombustion chamber is ignited and the valve 40 is opened again to allow combustion products to pass to the main combustion chamber 16 to complete combustion with the air or weak mixture therein. The fuel may be injected by nozzle 33 to the pre-combustion chamber while the valve 40 is closing. The valve 40 may be fully closed only instantaneously. The embodiment in Figs. 3, 4, 5 (not shown) includes inlet ducts.(56), (57) to the main and pre-combustion chambers respectively. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), an additional injection nozzle (72) or a carburetter may be arranged to supply fuel to the inlet duct (69) leading to the pre-combustion chamber. The inlet and exhaust valves and the transfer valve 40 are operated by a common cam-shaft (62, Fig. 5).
