Abstract
915,350. Purifying exhaust. OXY-CATALYST Inc. July 14, 1961, No. 25596/61. Class 7(2) [Also in Group XXVIII] An exhaust gas purifier for use with a spark ignition reciprocating I.C. engine adapted to operate on leaded gasoline fuel comprises a air inspirator 3, Fig. 1, a purifier housing 1 containing a bed of randomly distributed catalyst pellets P, the housing having guide means to lead the exhaust gas and air mixture through the bed which has a flow cross-section in the range of 1,500 to 32,000 square inches per pound per minute of fuel consumed by the engine when the minimum total energy of the mixture is entering the bed, the bed thickness being approximately uniformly 0À3 to 3 inches and the catalyst pellets providing a surface area in the range of 115 to 250 square inches per cubic inch of piston displacement. Exhaust gases passing through pipe 2, draw in ambient air through pipe 10 from filter 11 into chamber 9. The resultant mixture passes in the direction of arrows through the catalyst bed which is held between perforated grids 25, 26, Fig. 2, e.g. of stainless steel, mounted to permit thermal expansion. The housing 1, e.g. of stainless steel or aluminized steel, has thermal insulation 1a and a metal covering 1b. The geometric shape of the catalyst bed may be flat or annular in the sense of confinement between concentric cylindrical or conical entrance and exit surfaces, the radial cross-section of which may be circular, elliptical, oval or polygonal with radial inward or outward gas flow. Alternatively the bed may be confined between concentric spherical segments. Catalysts in cylindrical pelleted form may comprise a carrier of activated metal oxide, e.g. beryllia, thoria, magnesia, zincite, zirconia, alumina impregnated with metals or metal oxides such as platinum, palladium, rutherium, rhodium, copper, silver, chromium, vanadium, manganese, iron or mixtures of copper and chromium oxides.
