Abstract
1429664 Treating I.C. engine exhaust gas ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 29 March 1973 [30 March 1972] 15063/73 Heading B1W An I.C. engine has an exhaust gas system, means for controlling the engine air/fuel mixture to enable a rich mixture to be supplied to the engine, a reactor in the exhaust gas system for decomposing injurious constituents in the exhaust gases, a secondary air feed line leading into the exhaust gas system at a location upstream of the reactor, an oxygen probe positioned at a location in the exhaust system downstream of the outlet of the secondary air feed line for assertaining the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gases at that location, and means responsive to a signal generated by the probe for regulating the rate of feed of secondary air through the secondary air feed line. Engine 10 is supplied with a slightly substoichiometric fuel/air mixture, a catalytic reactor 12 and an oxygen probe 13 which generates a signal which operates a valve 15 via an amplifier 14. Valve 15 controls the flow of air from an engine driven pump 17 into the exhaust system. The probe 13 may be upstream of the reactor 12 and have a catalytically effective surface or a catalyst associated specifically with the probe may be arranged upstream thereof. A thermal reactor may be used instead of, or in addition to the catalytic reactor.
