Abstract

1377908 Regulating I C engines SOC INDUSTRIELLE DE BREVETS ET D'ETUDES 13 April 1973 [28 April 1972] 17881/73 Heading F1B An I. C. engine system comprises an I. C. engine with a regulating device to regulate the richness of the fuel/air mixture the engine receives and a catalytic oxidation device through which the exhaust gases pass, the oxidation device comprising a catalytic chamber 16 with an air intake 15a and intake 16a and outlet 16b for exhaust gases and means to admit to the air intake 15a an air-flow proportional to the air-flow to the engine, the regulating device comprising means to measure the temperature increase between intake 16a and outlet 16b and to regulate in response thereto the mixture richness. The richness is reduced or increased according to whether the temperature difference is greater or less than a reference value. The temperature is measured in the chamber 16 by thermocouples 17 and 18, whose outputs are fed to an amplifier 19, the output of which is greater when the temperature difference between the thermocouples is greater. The output of amplifier 19 and a reference voltage provided via a potentiometer 21 are compared by amplifier-comparator 20, which delivers an output voltage to control a servomotor 22 and hence control needles 7 and 11 to regulate the mixture strength. In Fig. 2, the output of amplifier-comparator 20 is fed to a sawtooth signal generator 31 whose output is fed to comparator 32 with a sawtooth signal from generator 30 responsive to a pulse triggering device 29 which may be driven by the engine. The signal from generator 30 has sawteeth with slope determined by a potentiometer controlled by valve flap 24 in response to air-flow to the engine. The comparator 32 provides a signal from means 33 to electromagnetic valve 34 while the output from generator 31 is greater than that from generator 30. If the mixture supplied to the engine is too weak, the temperature rise in chamber 16 keeps valve 34 open longer to provide more fuel to the engine.
