Abstract

1423641 Treating I.C. engine exhaust gas VOLKSWAGENWERK AG 30 April 1973 [26 May 1972] 20410/73 Heading B1W [Also in 'Divisions Fl and G3] To reduce the harmful substances in the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine, the fuel/air mixture to the engine is controlled according to the temperature difference between two points in a catalytic converter fed with the exhaust gas. In the embodiment shown, thermistors or thermocouples 5, 6 measure the exhaust gas temperature before and after passing through a catalyst 4 in chamber 3, to control the fuel-air mixture and maintain the temperature difference across the catalyst at a maximum. The mixture may be controlled by a needle valve in a carburettor (Fig. 8 not shown) or the period (or pressure) of a fuel injection system (Fig. 9 also not shown). The exhaust may be split into two chambers and mixed, in one of them, with air or oxygen free gas or fuel, causing a reaction in that chamber if the fuelair mixture is too weak or rich. Temperature sensers in each chamber e.g. across a further catalyst are connected in a bridge circuit which provides the mixture control signal.
