Abstract
1444362 Treating exhaust gases LUCAS ELECTRICAL Ltd 23 Nov 1973 [28 Nov 1972] 54823/72 Heading B1W [Also in Divisions F1, Gl and G3] Samples of exhaust gas from an I.C. engine are supplied substantially simultaneously to first and second reaction zones 12a, 13a, a reductant is supplied to mix with the first sample and an oxidant is supplied to mix with the second sample, the mixtures passing over catalysts 14, 15 which accelerate the reactions in the mixtures, sensors 18, 19 in the reaction zones producing signals indicative of the magnitude of the respective reactions, the signals being compared to give an output in accordance with the composition of the exhaust gas. Fuel is supplied as reductant via conduit 16 and air as oxidant via conduit 17 and the sensors, which may be thermocouples to product electric signals or may be such as to produce mechanical or fluid pressure signals, are connected to emplifier 24, which gives an output used to control the air and fuel supplied to an engine by a carburettor or fuel injection system to .produce exhaust gases of a predetermined constitution. With an injection system, Fig. 2 (not shown), a control mechanism (26) controls the air-fuel ratio in response to engine speed and manifold depression or throttle opening as well as in response to the output of the amplifier 24. The thermocouples may be replaced by thermistors in a balanced bridge network. The exhaust gases fed to inlet 11 may be a small proportion of the engine exhaust gas. The catalyst is plastisized titanium mesh.
