Abstract
534,568. Silencers for gaseous currents. BURGESS BATTERY CO. March 14, 1940, No. 4814. Convention date, May 1, 1939. [Class 7 (ii)] Exhaust or other gases entering at 5 pass directly through an aligned opening 11 to a " snubber " chamber 10, or byepass through a chamber 9 to a conduit 13 leading to the outlet 6, the gases in the chamber 10 also passing to the outlet through perforations in the conduit 13. The opening 11 may be formed with a lip 12, which may be directed away from, or towards, the inlet 5. A number of such units may be arranged in series, the outlet 6 from the first unit being arranged opposite the opening 11 of the second snubber chamber. Or the snubber chamber may be arranged in series with silencers of other types, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7. In Fig. 6, there are two inlets 53, 54 connected to the two cylinder banks of an engine, and arranged opposite openings 60, 61 leading to a snubber chamber 59, the byepass tube 62 being slotted at 63 and leading to a further silencer comprising chambers 64, 67 connected by perforated tubes 65, 66 overlapping the tube 62 and an outlet tube 69. In Fig. 7, the gases first pass through a perforated tube 76 surrounded by sound-absorbing material 73 and then are directed by a baffle 79 to an annular passage 80 arranged opposite an annular opening 83 to the snubber chamber 84, with byepass chamber 81 and slotted outlet tube 86. Specification 312,937, [Class 7 (ii)], is referred to.
