Abstract

890,931. Exhaust silencers. CHILLCOTTS Ltd. April 13, 1961 [April 19, 1960], No. 13633/60. Class 7(2). An exhaust silencer comprises a cylindrical resonance chamber B separated from the silencer casing 1 by an annular space 3 and spiral vanes 9, 10, in the spaces upstream and downstream of the chamber B. The gases enter at 5, flow outwardly through the vanes 9 to the space 3 and then inwardly through the vanes 10 to an orifice 17 leading to a pipe 12 passing through an outlet chamber C. The pipe 12 is perforated and provided with a baffle 15 so that the gases flow through perforations D into chamber C and back through perforations E to the outlet 20. In a modification the pipe 12 is replaced by a pair of aligned pipes with a short gap between their inner ends.
