Abstract

656,552. Exhaust-silencers. PLASSE, G. Oct. 6, 1947, No. 26847. Convention date, Dec. 10, 1938. [Class 7(ii)] A silencer comprises a casing 1 enclosing slotted conical sheet metal baffles 2. As shown, the central baffles are connected together through their outwardly flaring ends. The perforations in the baffle plates are constituted by a plurality of series of rectilinear short slots 3 cut in the baffle plates, each series extending along helical lines drawn on the baffle plates. Slots are cut in the metal of the cones and the metal is upset towards the outside when the cones are intended to receive gases through the inside and towards the inside when the cones show their apex to the incoming flow of gas. The apexes of the cones may be joined instead of spaced as shown. There may be two casings 1 associated with a single inlet and single outlet or independent inlets and outlets may be provided. For very powerful engines it is possible to associate several silencers in a single casing. Air passes, due to the motion of a vehicle in which the silencer is mounted, between tubes 4 and 5 and mixes with the exhaust.
