Abstract

1,219,404. Exhaust silencers. HENDRY BROS (LONDON) Ltd. and L. FOTHERGILL. March 29, 1968 [March 30, 1967, May 31, 1967; Oct. 13, 1967], Nos. 14492/67, 25154/67 and 46865/67. Heading F1B. The expansion chamber between an inlet 1 and an outlet pipe 8 contains a wad 6 of sound-absorbing material, e.g. stainless steel knitted, woven or felted fabric, in the path of exhaust gases from the inlet. The inlet pipe, which may terminate short of the wad 6, a tube 2 surrounding the wad and the outer casing 7 provide annular flow paths through which exhaust gas can flow to outlet pipe 8 as indicated by the arrows A. Exhaust gas can flow through an aperture 5 or apertures in the end wall 4 of the tube 2. A tube 11 of sound-absorbing material, e.g. asbestos or long stranded glass fibre, surrounds a perforated or mesh section (12), Fig. 2 (not shown), of the outlet pipe 8. The gases may discharge from the outlet pipe 8 axially or through peripheral perforations.
