Abstract

1455642 Silencers for IC engines JAMES B CARTER Ltd 2 April 1974 14673/74 Heading F1B A silencer for an I.C. engine comprises a generally cylindrical housing 11 having an outlet 27 and two opposed inlets 21, 22, the inlets and the housing 11 having coaxial longitudinal axes and the housing having two opposed end-walls and a circumferential side wall; a single, continuous spiral duct 19 extending about said longitudinal axes in the housing having an inlet in communication with the housing inlets 21, 22 and an outlet in communication with the housing outlet 27. The duct 19 may be rectangular, for example square, or circular in cross-section. The outlet 27 is joined to a tailpipe 28. A lining 25 of sound absorbing material may be provided on one or both sides of the duct 19 and kept in place by a perforated screen 26. Sound absorbent material 15, 16 adjacent the housing ends is separated from the duct 19 by perforated screens 17 and 18. The distance between the walls of the duct 19 may be constant or may increase or decrease from the inner to the outer end of the duct.
