Abstract

916,836. Exhaust silencers. HOUSE, J. I., and WARD, L. G. June 27, 1961 [June 28, 1960], No. 23177/61. Class 7(2) In an exhaust gas silencer in which a collar 20, Fig. 1 is slidably mounted on an inlet tube 14, a helical spring 19 with closed convolutions is connected at one end to the collar and is closed at the other end which is restrained from axial movement so that the exhaust gases can open and pass through the spring convolutions. Exhaust gas enters chamber 21 and is deflected through 180 degrees by end plate 17. Increase of gas pressure moves collar 20 leftwards to open the spring convolutions to allow gas to pass through chamber 22, openings 23, 25 and tube 15. Continuous movement of spring 19 prevents carbon build-up. In a modification, the baffle plate 27 is removed and tube 15 is replaced by an open helical spring or in a further modification, Fig. 6, only an outlet tube 55 is provided. In another embodiment, an elliptical casing 70, Fig. 8, encloses a pair of springs 79, 80, co-operating with a forked inlet. In all embodiments the cross-sectional area enclosed by the spring, the cross-sectional area between convolutions of the extended spring, the area of openings in the transverse baffle and outlet tube are greater than the flow crosssection of the inlet tube and the bore of the inlet and outlet tubes are substatially the same.
