Abstract

985,051. Silencers for gaseous currents. ARVIN INDUSTRIES Inc. Feb. 12, 1962 [July 17, 1961], No. 5369/62. Heading F1B A resonator chamber for silencing gas flow in a pipe 10 comprises a member 16, Fig. 2, secured in or on the pipe to form a resonator space 23 connected to the gas flow in the pipe through a throat 24 formed between parts of the member 16 and pipe. As applied to an exhaust system a number of resonator elements 16 are disposed in the exhaust pipe 10 and some elements 16<SP>1</SP> on the outside thereof. The throats of the chambers open into the pipe at or near the pressure points of the standing wave systems in the pipe and the chambers are tuned to the main harmonics of the system. Both an internal and external member may be mounted at the same pressure point. The internal members 16, Figs. 2 and 3, comprise a concave member surrounded by a flange 22 which is secured to the pipe and in which the throat 25 is formed. The external members 16<SP>1</SP> are formed as in Fig. 5 with the throat 24<SP>1</SP> formed in the flange 22<SP>1</SP> and connected to the pipe through hole 27<SP>1</SP>. In Fig. 17 the throat 58 is formed as a separate trough.
