Abstract

1281487 Silencing gaseous flow TENNECO Inc 14 May 1970 [19 June 1969] 23437/70 Heading F1B A partition 29 in a silencer 1, e.g. for I.C. engine exhaust gases, with an inlet 11 and an outlet 15 has a channel shaped member 59 secured thereto to define an elongated passage 64. The passage 64 communicates through an opening 57 in the partition 29 with the chamber 23, is closed at one end 61 and may be open or closed at the other end 63. The passage 64 may be defined in part by an indentation in the partition 29. The passage 64 serves as a quarter wave length tuner when closed at both ends and when open at the end 63 operates in conjunction with the chamber 25 to attenuate a desired low frequency. The member 59 may be spot-welded to the partition 29 or secured by tabs 65 passing through slits 67 in the partition. The member 59 may have perforations. Chambers 39 and 51 surrounding louvred portions of the inlet and outlet pipes 17 and 19 attenuate high frequencies.
