Abstract

1284956 Making exhaust gas silencers TENNECO Inc 3 June 1970 [18 July 1969] 26890/70 Heading B3A [Also in Division F1] An exhaust gas silencer includes a one piece tube and shell assembly 35 comprising a shell 67 surrounding and joined in a common seam to a tube 57. In one embodiment, the part 61 of a T- shaped blank is formed into a tube 57 and the part 65 of the blank curved round the tube to form a shell 67, the edges being joined together at 71 by seaming or welding. The tube 57 is formed with louvres 75 opening into the chamber 55 formed between the tube 57 and shell 67. Pinches (79, 81, 83) (Fig. 4, not shown) are made at the ends of the shell 67 so as to seal the ends of the chamber 55. The assembly 35 is positioned within a silencer divided into three compartments 13, 15, 17 by partitions, one of which 19 has an opening 39. An outlet gas flow tube 41 has louvres 45 opening into the chamber 15 and louvres 47 opening into a sealed annular chamber formed by a surrounding shell 49. The chambers 15 and 17 are interconnected by a tube 53. In another embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown) one end only of the chamber 55 of the tube and shell assembly is sealed. Alternatively, the shell is pinched intermediate its ends leaving both ends open (Fig. 7, not shown). An L-shaped blank may be formed into a tube and shell assembly, the shell (357) (Fig. 8, not shown) of which interconnects chambers (325) and (327) and the tube (359) of which interconnects chambers (325) and (329).
