Abstract

1315339 Silencing exhaust gases; making silencers HARMO INDUSTRIES Ltd 13 Oct 1971 [10 Nov 1970 27 April 1971] 53412/70 and 11741/71 Heading B3A [Also in Division F1] An exhaust silencer for an I.C. engine (see Division Fl) comprises at least two gas flow tubes (formed, for example, by the two portions of a single tube 12) each closed at an end within a surrounding chamber 10, the gas flow tubes having peripheral holes 15 each with a crosssectional area not greater than that of a 0À10 inch diameter circle. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the tube 12 is crimped in the middle to form the two gas flow tubes by producing flattened portions 113, of which there may be three or more. An outer tube 18, which may or may not have holes similar to the holes 15, may be provided surrounding tube 12 to increase the gas flow path. Tube 18 is also crimped at its middle portion to produce flattened portions 19.
