Abstract

765,639. Exhaust-silencers. THERESE, M. P. H. March 15, 1955 [March 16, 1954], No. 7483/55. Class 7 (2). A silencer comprises a truncated conical casing 1 attached by the larger end thereof to an exhaust pipe 2, at least one expansion chamber 3 the outlet end of which is formed by a circular cone 6 coaxial with the casing and having the apex thereof directed towards the flow of exhaust gas, and an assembly of ducts 7 extending along part of the length of and around the periphery of the casing, the gas passing from those ducts to an outlet tube 9. As shown in Fig. 1, the pipe 2 terminates in a nozzle 4 provided with a screen 5 and disposed at the middle and on the axis of the chamber 3, the gases being deflected by the cone 6 and into the ducts 7 which are formed by the corrugations of a helically wound strip of sheet metal. The cone 11, into which air is entrained, together with the tubes 9,.10, forms a device which accelerates withdrawal of the gases from the silencer. In modifications, (a) there is an inner casing 1d, Fig. 2, and expansion chambers 3a and 3b are formed between that casing and opposed cones 6a, 12a and 6b, 12b, the tube 9 being provided with apertures 14, and the casing 1 having peripheral slits 18, and (b), Fig. 3 (not shown), each expansion chamber is closed at the outlet end thereof by an apertured cone.
