Abstract

721,209. Generating combustion products under pressure. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. Sept. 11, 1952, [Sept. 24, 1951.] No. 22350/51. Class 51 (1). In a combustion apparatus, for example for use in a gas turbine plant, comprising an outer air casing and an inner flame tube, the wall of the flame tube is enclosed for at least part of its length by a tubular sheath, the annular space between the sheath and the flame tube wall communicating with the interior of the flame tube through a radially-facing opening in the flame tube wall, and with the space between the sheath and the air casing through an opening axially-spaced along the length of the space from the first opening, so constituting a passage for the flow of cooling air. The annular space and the openings are so dimensioned that the stream of cooling air enters the flame tube with a radial velocity not greater than the axial velocity of the gases within the flame tube. The two velocities may be equal. The annular space between the sheath 11 and the flame tube wall 2 in Fig. 1 is divided by means of annular bracket members 12 into axially successive annular spaces 14a, 14b ... The flame tube wall is formed with a double row of small apertures 15a, 15b ... at the upstream end of each of these spaces and the sheath is formed with a row of small apertures 16a, 16b ... at the downstream end of each of the spaces. The annular spaces 14a, 14b ... are divided by circumferentially-extending vanes 20 which form secondary cooling surfaces. In a second embodiment, Fig. 4,'a a plurality of axially successive sheath members 11a, 11b . . . enclose the flame tube, the sheaths being closed at the upstream end and open at the downstream end to the surrounding air space. Openings 15a, 15b ... are formed in the flame tube towards the upstream ends of the annular air spaces. Specification 636,624 is referred to.
