760,493. Exhaust pipes; dealing with exhaust gases. COVENTRY CLIMAX ENGINES, Ltd. March 17, 1955 [Jan. 7, 1954], No. 499/54. Class 7 (2). In an exhaust system for an I.C. engine, an exhaust pipe 1 has one or more venturi-like constrictions each formed by one or more louvres 3 projecting obliquely in the direction of flow of the gases into the exhaust pipe, each louvre having an opening 5 adjacent the downstream end thereof through which air is caused to flow into the stream of gases. As shown in Fig. 1, the pipe 1 is provided with a number of pairs of diametrically opposed louvres 3, each pair forming a venturi-like constriction having two apertures 5 through which air is drawn into the pipe by the increase in velocity of the exhaust gases at each constriction and thereby causing dilution of the gases ; the louvres may be arranged in circumferentially spaced groups of three or more. A tube 2 provided with apertures 6 surrounds the pipe 1 and forms part of a guard structure on a motor truck. The louvres are formed by making circumferential slits 4 around wall of the pipe and then pressing in the wall. According to the Provisional Specification, the exhaust pipe 1 is provided with apertures in which are fitted short pipes projecting into the pipe and inclined in the direction of the flow of the gases ; preferably, the pipes are disposed in two or more longitudinally spaced annular series, and extend through apertures in a sleeve concentrically surrounding the pipe 1.
