Abstract

781,290. Exhaust-silencers. SMITH, E. May 19, 1955 [Feb. 19, 1954], No. 4975/54. Class 7(2) In a silencer comprising a casing 10 having an inlet 12 and an outlet 16, there is at least one support member 22, i.e. an annular plate, provided with a central, tapered, tubular member 24 extending towards the outlet, and at least one deflector 26 disposed about the member 24 and adapted to deflect part of the gas towards the axis of the casing. As shown, the members 24, which have outlets progressively increasing in diameter towards the outlet 16, each have attached thereto a perforated tube 32 provided with an annular series of holes 34 disposed on a pitch circle in the diametral plane containing the smaller end of the member, and the outlet end of each tubular member 26 is cut off as at 28 on a plane inclined to the axis of the member. The inlet and outlet 12, 16 are conical in form and a perforated tube 30 is attached to the cylindrical portion 14 of the inlet. That part of the gases passing to the periphery of the casing is deflected back to the axis of the casing by abutments 20, and that part of the gases passing through the outlet end of the members 24 experiences an increase in velocity and a corresponding drop in pressure so that the gas which has flowed through the members 26 passes into the tube 32 from where it is dispersed back into the casing. Perforated tubes may be mounted on the members 26.
