Abstract

398,857. Exhaust pipes and silencers. STERZENBACH, R., 42, Burchard Strasse, Tempelhof, and TROSCHWITZ, T., 1A, Andernacherstrasse, Karlshorst, both in Berlin. March 22, 1932, No. 8554. [Class 7 (ii).] Exhaust gases are led obliquely into an annular space between a casing a, Fig. 1, and a perforated tube e, whence they pass into another annular space between the tube e and an inner perforated tube c through which a stream of air flows when the vehicle, on which the silencer is mounted, is in motion. The tube e is secured to the casing at the outlet end and at the inlet end is in contact with a conical cap through which the air is admitted. Owing to the inclination of the pipes b, the gases will travel in a more or less helical path within the silencer. In a modification, Fig. 4, in order to prevent fracture from vibration, the exhaust manifold comprises three tapering sections h flexibly spigoted one into the other at i, the end sections being curved for the sake of flexibility.
