Abstract

387,584. Exhaust-silencers. CLAVIE, J. B. M. O., 6, Boulevard Ornano, Paris. July 1, 1932, No. 18696. Convention date, July 1, 1931. [Class 7 (ii).] A flame-preventing silencer, particularly applicable to aircraft engines, comprises an outer casing 1 to which is secured at its forward end an inner tube 2, both the casing and tube being swept by the outer air. The annular space between casing and tube is divided by baffles such as 9, 10 into a number of helical ducts such as 11, 12. Exhaust gases from outlets 13 .. 17 are led into one or more of such ducts 11 so as to flow through the annular chamber towards the forward end chamber 3 where they meet gases from another exhaust outlet 18 tangentially arranged on the side of the casing opposite to outlets 13 .. 17. The whole of the gases then travel through the other helical duct 12 in the opposite direction towards the rear end of the silencer whence they are discharged through a number of small flame-preventing passages 24 formed between annular bodies 5 comprising plain and corrugated portions 6, 7, Fig. 4, telescoped one over another. These annular bodies are enclosed in a crinkled hood 21 having slots 22, and an enlarged part 23 adapted to facilitate penetration of air due to the motion of the aircraft. The smallest of the annular bodies, 8, fits the pipe 2 frictionally. An ejector action is stated to be produced at the rear ends of the passages 24.
