Abstract
436,386. Exhaust and like silencers. POUGHER, A. W., 109, Chorlton Road, and FITTON, S., 48, Brown Street, both in Manchester. April 10, 1934, No. 10771. [Class 7 (ii)] Inlet or exhaust gases are divided up into separate streams by a plurality of honeycomb cells 6 formed by longitudinally-arranged corrugated plates 2. The plates may be welded, soldered, or otherwise fixed directly to a container 3, or they may be fixed to a number of rings so as to be bodily removable from the container 3. One or both ends of the assembly of corrugated plates may be of conical formation, and the inlet end 7 of the container is also conical. The plates may be formed with longitudinal ribs or flutings of less depth than the corrugations. The container 3 is preferably surrounded by a casing 4 having longitudinal or spiral flutings 5 to form passages for air, which has a cooling action on the gases, and mixes with them in a space 9 at the exit end of the silencer. The corrugations may be circular, elliptical, or angular.
