258. Aslatt, F. July 3. Exhaust-silencers.-Air is drawn into the exhaust pipe of an internal-combustion engine to silence and cool the gases by the inductive effort of the exhaust either through non-return valves placed as near the engine exhaust ports as possible or through orifices b in a pipe a which surrounds a number of cone-shaped pipes A placed in series. The perforations are protected from dirt by rings b<1>. The pipe has outlets a<9>, a<10>, all of different lengths. In a modification, the pipe a is dispensed with, suitable baffles diverting the air into the cone-shaped pipes.
