Abstract

567,173. Cooling. PITCHFORD, J. H., ALCOCK, J. F., PAXMAN, E. P., and DAVEY, PAXMAN, & CO., Ltd. Nov. 2, 1943, No. 18126. [Class 7 (ii)] Means for cooling an internal-combustion engine comprises a casing 4 mounted around the engine cylinder 1 and its silencer 5, the exhaust passing through orifices 10 into a conical passage 12 in the casing and producing an ejector action, whereby air is drawn through the casing through an orifice 6 to cool the cylinder. The orifice 6 is located at a point remote from the passage 12 and is shaped, Fig. 3, to allow air flow past the fins 8a of the cylinder head. In a modification. Fig. 5, the fins 8a may be curved so as to direct air through the gap between. the valves, and an extra air opening may be provided in the top of the casing. In. a multi-cylinder engine, each cylinder may be provided with a casing component enclosing its silencer or the cylinders may be located in a common casing with a number of air inlets or external baffles and all the exhausts led to a common silencer.
