Abstract

1,263,979. Cooling I. C. engines; silencing gaseous flow. H. LIST. May 19, 1969 [June 6, 1968], No.26512/69. Heading F1B. An I.C. engine with a soundproofing casing 1, 2, 4, 6, e.g. of sheet steel, heat-resistant synthetic material or multi-layer sheet is air-cooled by a crank-shaft driven blower 11 which delivers all its output to a distributing chamber 22 between the engine and the casing. From the chamber 22 the air flows in separate streams over the cylinders 9 and cylinder heads 10, the valve gear cover 5 via apertures 24 and the sump 3 via a gap 27 between the casing and a casing spacer 7. The fuel-injection pump 29 and the starter 31 are located in the path of cooling air within the casing. Air inlet and exhaust silencers 15 and 18 (formed as) part of the casing or as separate units are lined with a soundabsorbing coating 16 and define changes of flow direction. The casing, Figs. 4, 4a, 5 and 5a (not shown), may terminate at the level of the sump connecting flange, passages (32, 32<SP>1</SP>) being provided to conduct air from the distributing chamber (22) at one side of the engine to the space between the casing and the crank-case at the other side. Air may be drawn through the spaces between the crank-case (36), Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), and the casing (37) of a single cylinder engine by a blower (35) located at the end of the engine opposite the air inlets (38). The blower delivers to a distributing chamber (22<SP>1</SP>) above the blower for flow in separate streams over the cylinder and cylinder head (40, 41) and the valve gear cover.
