Abstract

877,560. Cooling cylinders and fuel injectors. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. Nov. 5, 1959 [Nov. 7, 1958], No. 37599/59. Classes 7(2) and 7(3). In an air-cooled overhead valve engine the exhaust valve 5, Fig. 2, is downstream of the inlet valve 4 in relation to the cooling air flow and the axes of the parts of the inlet and exhaust passages 13, 15, adjacent their flanged openings 12, 14 in the side of the cylinder head are on opposite sides of a plane 8 through the valve axes, the valve port ends of the passages being curved sideways and downwards. The cross-section 28, Fig. 1, of the passages 13, 15, is made rectangular or oval near the flanges 12, 14, and a vane 30, Fig. 2, directs parts of the cooling air towards the bridge 27 between the valve ports and towards a fuel injector or combustion chamber 31. In a modification, Fig. 3, a vane 32 guides the hot air from the cooling fins upwards whereby the incoming stream of cooling air is deflected to the bridge 27 and in a further modification the plane through the valve axes is at an acute angle to the crank-shaft axis 9.
