Abstract
884,929. Cooling cylinders; combustion chambers. MOTOREN-WERKE MANN HEIM A.G. Sept. 30, 1960 [Oct. 10, 1959], No. 33645/60. Classes 7(2) and 7(3). In an overhead valve air-cooled fuel injection engine, part of the cooling air flowing through passages 11 between guides 8 and the combustion chamber wall 10 towards a central air tunnel 25 formed between the intake and exhaust passages 5, 6, is diverted through openings 24 into cooling air passages 33 formed along the sides of the cylinder head. The cylinder head comprises a lower wall 1 connected by partitions 3, 4, in which the passages 5, 6, are formed, to an upper wall 2 forming a rocker bore. The combustion chamber wall is formed with inclined fins 9 which direct part of the cooling air stream through the passages 11 over a dividing web 23 directly into the openings 24 formed in the upper wall 2, the remainder being deflected by the web 23 into the tunnel 25 into which project cooling fins 26 on the partitions 3, 4. A rise 31 in the wall 30 produces an air swirl 32 which increases the cooling of the wall 30. The combustion chamber 10 is insulated from contact with the cylinder head by packing between the chamber 10 and its insert 15, the chamber being held by a clamp 14.
