Abstract

982,334. Four-stroke supercharged air-cooled engines. KLOCKNER-HUMBOLDT-DEUTZ A.G. March 23, 1962 [March 25, 1961], No. 11194/62. Heading F1B. In a four-stroke engine having inlet and exhaust ports 17, 18 in the head and preexhaust ports 20 in the cylinder wall, the total area of the inlet ports exceeds that of the exhaust port in the head and an exhaust turbine 23 is connected to the pre-exhaust ports 20. In the air-cooled V-engine shown, each cylinder has two inlet valves 17 and a single exhaust valve, the exhaust pipe 27 leading either to atmosphere or to the turbine 23 which drives a supercharger. Each bank of cylinders has a separate cooling air blower 29. The feed injection pumps 11 or actuated from the overhead camshafts 10, the cams on which actuate the inlet valves directly and the exhaust valves through rockers. The cylinders 2 are enclosed by a housing 4 guiding the cooling air and supporting the rocker casing 3, the cylinders being suspended from the cylinder head 5 to permit free longitudinal expansion.
