Class 7(2) In-line cylinders 2 Fig. 1, of an air-compressing injection engine each have overhead inlet valves 7, 7<SP>1</SP> on the same side of the longitudinal engine axis 5 as an inlet manifold 22, and overhead exhaust valves 8 on the other side of the axis 5, the valves 7, 7<SP>1</SP> having individual inlet ducts 18, 21 which as seen from above the engine open to the cylinder tangentially and at right angles to each other and the other ends of which respectively emerge at the top and side of the respective cylinder head 3. The ducts 18 connect with bolted on manifold branches 28 and the ducts 21 connect with passages 25 integral with or secured to valve rocker covers 4 and having rubber connections 31 to manifold branches 30. Combustion air is blown or sucked through the ducts 18, 21, which adjacent the valves 7, 7<SP>1</SP> are, respectively inclined downwardly at about 25 and 40 degrees. In a modification, Fig. 6, two cylinders with a common head have valves 7 served by a branched passage 21.
