Abstract
710,429. Cooling and construction of cylinders; combustion chambers. KLOCKNER-HUMBOLDT-DEUTZ AKT.-GES. Sept. 14, 1951 [Oct. 28, 19501, No. 21673/51. Classes 7(2) and 7(3) In a multi-cylinder air-cooled engine 'having a cylinder head 1, one passage 5, of two inlet and/or exhaust passages 4, 5 leading from two overhead valves 2, 3 mounted one behind the other in the longitudinal direction of the engine, passes upwardly to one side of a rocker box 6 and overhangs an adjacent cylinder head 12, fins 13 of which are correspondingly recessed or shortened. In a two-stroke engine, both valves 2, 3 may control exhaust passages, but in the four-stroke diesel engine shown they respectively control an exhaust passage 4 and an inlet passage 5. Cooling fins 11 are provided in a passage between the valves 2, 3 which emerges at one end above an auxiliary combustion chamber 9 in the head 1. In Fig. 4 (not shown), the passage 4 is curved to pass to the left of both valve push-rods 15 and contains a cylinder head securing nut 16, and in Fig. 5 (not shown), the passage is straight as seen in plan and passes between push-rods arranged unsymmetrically with regard to the cylinder, the fins 11 being straight in both cases.
