Abstract

1,003,191. Cylinders; combustion chambers. RICARDO & CO. ENGINEERS (1927) Ltd. April 4, 1962 [March 1, 1961], No. 7536/61. Heading F1B. A cylinder head for an air-cooled overhead valve engine is formed in two parts 11, 12, Fig. 2, the dividing plane 42 between which intersects the inlet and exhaust passages 30, so that they are formed partly in each of the two parts 11, 12, of the head, thereby permitting each part of the head to be formed by die casting. The two parts of the head are secured together by bolts 46A, Fig. 3, and correctly aligned by dowels 44, the bolt and dowel holes which open into the rocker box 17 being sealed, e.g. by a washer 48 or by a forced-in ball 49. A recess 22 accommodating a fuel injector 24 is formed in the upper part 11 and a bore 23 in which the injector is mounted is formed in the lower part 12. In a head with a combustion chamber 50, Fig. 6, the division line 42 passes through the chamber at the part where the wall 55 merges into the hot plug 52. In Fig. 9 cooling air is guided over vertical fins on the head 12 and cylinder 60 by a sheet metal cover 63, the upper part 11 of the head having a flange 61 guiding the air flow towards the fins. Long bolts 14 clamp the head and cylinder to the crankcase 62. Specification 810,547 is referred to.
