Abstract

1,014,291. Cylinders. RICARDS & CO. ENGINEERS (1927) Ltd. Sept. 4, 1962 [Sept. 5, 1961], No. 31888/61. Heading F1B. A cylinder head for an overhead valve engine comprises a thin plate 1, in which the valve ports 2, 3, are formed, bonded to an upper member 4 in which the intake and/or exhaust passages 5, 6, are formed, and grooves 8 are formed in the member 4 around and between the ports 2, 3, to form with the plate 1 cooling water passages connected to the main cooling water jacket. In a liquid fuel injection engine with a combustion chamber 7 formed in the member 4, grooves 8 are also formed around the mouth of the chamber. The plate 1 may be bonded by soldering, brazing, or welding and it may be of the same material as the member 4 or the plate 1 may be of steel or bronze while the member 4 is of an aluminium alloy with a similar coefficient of thermal expansion. The valve seats may be formed directly in the plate 1 or in rings 3a or 2a, Fig. 3, which are seated only in the plate or in both the plate 1 and member 4.
