Combustion Methods Of Internal-Combustion Engines
(AREA)
Abstract
14,791. Simpson, T. B., [Merrett, H., and Merrett, C. E.]. June 24. Valve-chests, construction of and c o o l i n g. - In engines in which the air for combustion is humidified by water or steam drawn into the cylinder on the suction stroke, the air - admission and exhaust valve-box is air-jacketed. The box 2 is formed with two or more passages 3, air passing therethrough into a casing 6 mounted on the box. A suction-operated valve 9 rests on a ring formed in the bottom of the casing 6 ; water from the cylinder jacket collects on the valve, entering the casing through a valve-controlled pipe 12. The humidified air enters the cylinder through the passage 14, the exhaust passing out by the same passage and heating the next charge of air and water.
