Combustion Methods Of Internal-Combustion Engines
(AREA)
Abstract
16,927. Goldsmith, F. A., and Corbett, F. Aug. 12. Gas or explosive - vapour engines.-In a fourstroke-cycle engine using heavy fuel, the combustion chamber is kept at the required temperature by the exhaust pipe passing through it. Both the admission valve (not shown) and the exhaust valve 10 are in the cylinder head, and the admission and exhaust pipes pass through the egg-shaped combustion chamber 3, which communicates with the cylinder by the restricted opening 5 and is waterjacketed. The exhaust pipe 9 may be provided with ribs 14. Fuel is supplied through the passage 7 and a supplementary supply of air through the passage 8, both entering through the valve 6. Light fuel is used at starting.
