Dirt, excluding; temperature, regulating.- In an internal-combustion engine, a pump is provided for forcing air intermittently between the exhaust-valve spindle a and its guide c so as to prevent the exhaust gases from striking the spindle and guide and thus prevent deterioration of the spindle and guide, or the deposition of carbon and oil, and sticking of the valve. In the arrangement shown, the pump e is formed in the spindle guide c. The pump draws in air through a valve k and delivers it through a passage y into a chamber d, whence it escapes upwards between the spindle and guide. In a modification, the pump piston is mounted on the valve spindle, the pump inlet valves are in the piston, and the spring for closing the exhaust valve bears on the pump piston. In another modification, a separate pump is used, and the supply of air from the pump to the chamber d is controlled by a valve worked from the exhaust-valve spindle.
