Abstract

18,744. Langdon, A. G. Aug. 20. Exhaust-silencers for internal-combustion engines comprise an inner chamber B into which the gases enter at C and from which they escape through the valve seating M into an outer chamber A, where they are mixed with water issuing through a series of ports H before escaping at the outlet D. The water is admitted by a pipe F to a chamber in the cover-plate E, which also forms a guide for the spindle of the valve J. The valve is normally held clear of the upper seating by a weak spring K, but is forced on to the seating by the exhaust gases when the silencer is working. When a slight vacuum is formed in the chamber B, the spring returns the valve to its normal position, and air is drawn in through the sleeve L to supply the deficiency; but when a strong vacuum is formed due to back-firing or other causes, the valve is drawn downwards on to the seating M and prevents dirt, water, or vapour from being drawn into the engine cylinders. When the engine is not running, the pin 0 is turned until it coincides with slots in the cover-plate, and then the valve and sleeve L are both lowered until the valve rests on the lower seating.
