Abstract

196,443. Dodson, E. Feb. 24, 1922. Spray carburettors.-In carburetting systems in which, to avoid self ignition or detonation of the mixture, an anti-detonation fluid is introduceod into the system when the compression is at or near its maximum and is at other times cut off, the admission of the fluid is controlled by a valve actuated by a diaphragm, piston or bellows subjected to the static depression in the induction system. The nozzle B delivers into the induction pipe A the usual quick-burning fuel such as petrol or paraffin which is liable to detonate at fully or nearly fully open positions of the throttle valve C. The anti-detonating fluid such as water or benzol, xylol, alcohol or a mixture or emulsion of these with water is admitted through a nozzle K supplied from a float chamber J<2>. Around the nozzle is an air passage formed by a tubular valve G and the mixed fluid and air pass through a port H in the valve to the induction system preferably through a pipe J<1> to the air inlet side of the throttle C or throat of the choke tube, but it may be admitted through the pipe J. The valve G is actuated by a spring-loaded piston F subjected on its underside to atmospheric pressure and on its upper side to the depression in the induction passage A through pipe D. When the throttle C is fully or nearly fully open, the depression is a minimum and the port H is open to admit the fluid. As the throttle is closed the depression increases, and the valve G lifts and closes the port H.
