Abstract

11,660. Ray, A. J. May 12. Valves; valve-gear.-Hollow rotary conical plug valves 8 in the casings 3 are cooled by the passage of carburetted air through their interior. The charge from a primary mixing- chamber 24, Fig. 2, enters the hollow valve stems at 16, and, after circulating through the valves, passes by pipes 18 to a secondary mixing- chamber 29, and thence, together with supplementary air admitted at 44, to the inlet ports of the valve casings. The valve port is a tapered groove 13 widest at the upper end, and open at both ends to the valve chamber, which communicates at 52 with the combustion chamber. By this arrangement, the valve is balanced in its casing. The valve stem works in a tapered seating, and the valve is held down in its casing by a bar 55, Fig. 2, which bears on a washer on the flange 17 of the valve stem. The valves are driven by claw clutches. The supplementary air valve 44, and a hinged valve 36 controlling the primary air and liquid fuel entering at 30, 37, have adjustable springs. The casing 3 has an oiling- groove 19.
