Abstract

484,072. Adding superheated steam to combustible charges. MICHEL, H. C. O., and RONODININGRAT, K. R T. Nov. 10, 1937, No. 30808. [Class 7 (ii)] Steam to be added to the charge in the carburetter 9 or the induction pipe, or injected into the combustion chamber, is twice superheated by the exhaust gases. Water kept under pressure in a reservoir 31 is converted into steam in the coils 21 and afterwards passed through the superheating elements 15, 3. being conveyed in the opposite direction to the exhaust flow. The water supply is controlled by a needle valve 35, and may be obtained from the engine cooling system. When insufficient steam is available, exhaust gases or atmospheric air may be induced into the flow through valves 48, 54, 20. The element 3 is supported by a removable cover 10 and the element 14 comprises an axial channel 17 for the unhindered passage of exhaust gases and an annular steam collector within the coil 15.
