Abstract

325,257. Hewitt, H. S., Whatmough, W. A., Weslake, H., and White, P. Nov. 10, 1928. Cylinders, ports and passages of. - The inlet valve is tapered gradually from the seating face to the stem, and the inlet passage 3 adjacent thereto is similarly shaped, so that when the valve is opened an annular passage 4 is formed which varies gradually in cross-section so as to permit unobstructed flow of the charge. The passage is of Venturi shape with the throat 2 adjacent the valve seat; and the gases preferably enter the cylinder parallel to its axis. In a multicylinder engine, the manifold 5 is made of such size as to cause a large pressure drop along the inlet passages, and a temperature-regulating device is provided to maintain the mixture above that of the condensation of the fuel vapour. Where a short inlet passage is not possible, a division plate is provided following the general shape of the passage and dividing it into two passages. Specifications 27123/02 and 150,520 are referred to.
