Abstract

15,770. Bickford, J. S. V. July 8. Spray carburettors.-In carburettors having choke-tubes made up of two vena contracta tubes 4, 5 in series, the jet 12 opens laterally into the tube 4 that is furthest from the engine, and a hot water or exhaust jacket 6 surrounds the tubes. In applying the invention to a carburettor having a rotary throttle valve 8, Figs. 1 and 2, supplementary air is admitted by apertures 17, and a slot 18 and mixture from the passage 7 is admitted by the apertures 16 during normal running and by apertures 19 for starting. Some of the apertures 17 may be put out of operation by plugging. To ensure that any leakage to the engine when the throttle is closed shall contain fuel, the chamber 22 immediately within the gland of the valve-tube operating spindle communicates by a passage 23 with the choke-tube 5. In a modification in which a reciprocating throttle valve is used, two pairs of double choke-tubes coming into action successively are employed, each provided with a jet opening laterally into its choke-tube and having its upper edge chamfered to an angle opposite to that of the choke-tube. A rotary supplementary valve may be employed for starting and an additional rotary shutter for controlling supplementary air may be employed. The two parts of the choke-tubes may be separate and connected by screw-threads.
