Abstract
129,739. McElrath, W. W. Dec. 15, 1917. Motor power plant; circular-flow type. - A motor installation for aircraft, submarines, &c. comprises a multicylinder internal-combustion engine 15 having a number of exhaust pipes 16 which communicate at an angle with one branch of a U-shaped pipe 17 leading to the annular inlet of a turbine 21 on the crank-shaft. The scavenging of the cylinders and the velocity of the exhaust in the pipe 17 may be increased by blowing air through the pipe 17 by a fan 38 geared to the cam shaft of the engine. The turbine comprises a bladed rotor 29, Fig. 13, which is driven by the exhaust gases discharged through spaced nozzles 33 and return passages 34, 35 arranged on opposite sides of the rotor.
