683,589. Motor power plant; jet propulsion plant, gas turbine plant. RICARDO & CO. ENGINEERS (1927), Ltd., ALCOCK, J. F. and NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D. April 12, 1951, No. 8529/51. Class 110(iii) [Also in Group XXVII] Relates to a power plant incorporating a twostroke internal-combustion engine G of the compression ignition type wherein each cylinder A has a ring of exhaust ports B superimposed above a ring of combined scavenging and charging ports C adapted to deflect the scavenging air upwards in the centre of the cylinder and then downwardly along the cylinder walls. Such a plant comprises a compressor H which is driven by a rotary part thereof and supplies scavenging air to the internalcombustion engine and a useful power turbine J which produces power in excess of that required to drive the compressor and is driven by the exhaust gases of the internal-combustion engine. The exhaust gases of the gas turbine are discharged through a jet propulsion nozzle L. The internalcombustion engine and the gas turbine jointly drive the compressor and a propeller T, through suitable transmission gearing. In a modification the propeller and the compressor are respectively driven by the turbine and the internal-combustion engine through suitable gearing. In a further modification, the turbine drives the propeller through transmission gearing and directly drives either a lowpressure compressor or a high-pressure compressor whilst the internal-combustion engine drives a second propeller and the high- or the low-pressure compressor, as the case may be, through transmission gearing.
