Abstract

788,609. Gas turbine plant. SOC. NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION. Feb. 15, 1955 [Feb. 26, 1954], No. 4511/55. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XXVII] A power plant comprises an internal combustion piston engine driving an air compressor comprising at least two stages, air from the higher pressure stage being supplied to the engine while air from a low-pressure stage is mixed with exhaust gases from the engine, the mixture of air and exhaust gases being used to drive a gas turbine. The amount of air used for mixing with the gases is greater than that passing to the engine. The internal-combustion piston engine 1 in Fig. 1 drives a two-stage centrifugal type air compressor 5 through a coupling 6. Air from the second compressor stage at pressure Pa passes to the induction manifold 8 and exhaust gases are discharged through the manifold 10 into a duct 9 where they are mixed with air discharged from the first compressor stage at pressure Pe, pressure Pa being greater than Pe. The mixture of gases and air passes to the turbine 11. In Fig. 6 is shown an assembly of engines a1, a2 ... each driving an air compressor. The mixture of exhaust gases and air from each engine is collected in a manifold 9a and after further heating in the combustion apparatus 40, the gases pass to the turbine 11. A suitable type of engine is shown in Fig. 3 comprising a piston 4 disposed in a cylinder having admission ports 17 and exhaust ports 16 controlled by a sleeve valve 18. The inlet ports are controlled by ports 20 in the sleeve and the exhaust ports by the top edge of the sleeve. The sleeve is given a combined reciprocating and rotary movement by means of a crank 21 on a shaft 23 which is driven by gearing from the main crankshaft. The support 25 of the shaft 23 may be rotated about the axis 28 by means of a servomotor piston 29 acting 'against the spring 30, thereby varying the areas of the admission and exhaust openings, as described in Specifications 742,303 and 742,360, [both in Group XXVII]. Specification 655,762 also is referred to.
