482,694. Exhaust-silencers. GOHLER, R., and GOHLER, T., (trading as GOHLER & CO.). July 20, 1937, Nos. 20115, 20116, and 20117. Convention dates, Sept, 7, 1936, Nov. 17, 1936, and June 30, 1937. [Class 7 (ii)] A silencer comprises a casing 1 formed with corrugations of annular or helical formation, and containing helical guide blades 13 which are inclined to the corrugations. The blades 13 may also be corrugated transversely to the direction of flow of the gases, and may increase in pitch from the inlet to the outlet end. When the corrugations in the casing are helical, the guide blades may be serrated so as to screw into the corrugations. The exhaust pipe 4 is formed with branches 2 welded to the end of the casing, and the guide blades may be attached to a central pipe 9, open at the front end for the inlet of air and perforated at the outlet end 10, which may be conical. The casing is connected by a narrow portion 6 to a double-conical chamber 17 ending in the outlet 8. The casing 1 may also be of conical form, either converging or diverging from the inlet end. The parts of the silencer are detachably connected by flanges 11 to facilitate cleaning. The casing may be circular, oval, &c. in cross section. In a modification, several sets of guide blades are detachably mounted on the air pipe 9 and spaced apart ; adjacent sets may be of opposite hand, and of different pitch.
