Abstract
263,558. Heather, F. Oct. 3, 1925. Exhaust-silencers.-A silencer comprises a number of similar units a of tubular form arranged end to end to form a tortuous path. As shown in Fig. 2, each unit has a curved surface d leading to a throat c, the throats being alternately on opposite sides. The units may be assembled in a tube g<1> or in a number of parallel tubes with a common inlet and outlet h. The length of the path in individual tubes g<1> may be arranged to differ, by varying the number of units a, the angles of the guide surfaces d, or the cubic content of each unit, in order that the exit from the tubes may take place in cyclic order instead of simultaneously. The throats may increase or decrease in size from the inlet to the outlet. In a modified form of unit, Fig. 7, the guide surfaces are inclined instead of curved. In another form, the throats of the units are staggered so that the gases take a helical path, and the enclosing tube may be mounted to rotate in the end pieces or the units may be mounted on a central rotatable shaft.
