Abstract

428,257. Exhaust-silencers. TYDEN, E. O. E., 36, Hantverkaregatan, Stockholm. July 23, 1934, No. 21534. Convention date, May 14. [Class 7 (ii)] Silencers comprising a body or bodies located in or forming part of the exhaust pipe, and provided with a plurality of passages in or approximately in the longitudinal direction of the pipe, are characterized by the combination of the following features : (1) the length of each passage in the direction of flow of the gases is at least about twenty times its diameter or largest cross-sectional dimension, (2) the sum of the smallest cross-sectional areas of the passages is equal or approximately equal to the cross-section of the exhaust pipe, and (3) all the passages are of practically equal length and between their ends are completely shut off from communication with other passages and with the outside air. In Fig. 2, the exhaust pipe is enlarged at 2 to accommodate a heat-resisting block 3 with the passages 4. In Fig. 5, the end of the pipe 11 is flattened for some distance and the walls corrugated to contact along lines 12 to form the separate passages 14.
