Abstract
360,540. Exhaust silencers. SUMMERFIELD, E., 31, Victoria Road, Netley Abbey, Hampshire, and BLACKMAN, J. W., Achilles, Grange Gardens, Pinner; Middlesex. Aug. 30, 1930, No. 25939. [Class 7 (ii).] The silencer comprises a rectangular casing 1 divided by partitions 2 into one central channel 3 and two pairs of outer channels 4, 5 and 6, 7. Exhaust gases entering at 8 pass through the channel 3 and then divide to pass in' succession through channels 4, 5 on the one hand, and channels 6, 7 on the other. The gases from channel 5 are deflected downwardly by a partition 9, and upwardly by a baffle 10, to meet the gases from channel 7, both streams entering a chamber 11, which may contain steel wool, before passing through a fishtail'12 to atmosphere. Perforated baffle-plates are inserted at 13, and baffles 15 render the passages 4 . . 7 tortuous. A flap valve 17 prevents damage from back-firing. An air scoop to passage 5 may be provided at 16. The cover 14 is secured by screws or a sliding joint and, upon its removal, access to the interior for cleaning is obtained.
