Abstract

316,369. Tomanovich, J. May 22, 1928. Exhaust silencers.-Exhaust gases from the cylinder 2, Fig. 1, pass by a pipe 1 into an expansion chamber 3 which encloses a shell 6 with inlet aperture 8 thereto. Between the shell and outer casing is a chamber 7 containing straight and arcuate diaphragms 10. The gases are discharged from the pipe 1 at 4 and circulated in the chamber 7, escaping ultimately through aperture 8 into the shell 6 whence they issue through a pipe 11 into a discharge chamber 13 containing a series of expanding cones 12, Fig. 4, with open telescopic joints. Discharge takes place at 14. An automatic valve 17 may be mounted on the pipe 11 or on the cylinder, to admit air between successive blasts of exhaust. In a modification, the cones 12 may be replaced by a series of semi-cones or curved vanes the ends of which overlap. In a further modification, Fig. 9 (not shown) two complete devices are used in series, the discharge from chamber 13 of one device being led to pipe 1 of the next.
